Very fine morning Fahrenheit 38 inside and 36 outside at 8 5/60 and sun shining

Had Ann she not quite well this morning - walked with her a little while in front of the house - she then while the joiners breakfasted sketched the interior of the hall - I out, about - breakfast at 9 5/60

Some time with Robert the joiner - then took Ann out with me - to Listerwick and Sun wood quarry - Lee seems wishful to try about 30 yards of fresh baring - Ann called to see Alice Rushworth, and we had before called at Hartley's cottage Lane ends to see the alterations, i.e. 3 cottages throu' to his own for his currier's business

Home at 12 25/60 but out talking to Robert Mann and Ann came to me again having escaped from a loud rap at the door - Miss S. Ralph left 2 cards for us

Ann and I then walked some time in front of the house till about 2 - Ann the better for the fine day and fresh air - then with Robert Norton again - till Ann came to say Joseph Mann had told her Brown had begun the bur walling to keep up the quarry road at Landymere, and was not doing it according to agreement - 1 foot broad in the bottom instead of 3 feet - went to Listerwick to hear what Joseph Mann said and Ann followed me on horseback

About a rood of walling done - 10 inches instead of 3 feet broad in the bottom, and increasing in breadth (tying on) upwards - advised Ann's calling for Booth to go with her to Landymere, and if he was not at home Ann to go without him which she did and stop Brown

I remained sometime at Listerwick spoke to William the engineman - will pay? - then with Robert Mann who began this morning making a road down Charles Howarth's field to the meer - taking out the soft soil, and replacing it with scale to lay wheel stone on - George and my 3 horses bringing the scale - John and Sam Booth and Robert Fielding the fireman pheying in all today

It was about 4 when I left Robert Mann and went past Lower brea into the new high road and thence to Cowgate to look at a largish oak blown down - went all thro' the wood - found another larger oak torn up by the roots - and saw 2 or 3 not large old oaks that might be taken root and all to help to safetyize the Lodge road - it struck me also that I might 2 or 3 fine tallish larches to the allen car? - he returning by the old Mitham road Joseph Mann sent word by George that Holt was at Listerwick

Some time there with him - he and Booth to meet there between 9 and 10 on Thursday morning to set out blacksmith's shop and sheds - told Robert Mann to go with them Meer-road tomorrow

Then sauntered to the hut and along the fields home and came in at 6 3/4 - dressed went into the cellar - 1 marsala

Dinner at 7 10/60 - Ann read French - asleep on the sofa - coffee - Ann read aloud the newspaper

Then wrote all the above of today till 10 5/60

It struck me this afternoon while at Listerwick that I might as well build a cottage for the banksman (Robert Mann) adjoining the boiler house I think it might be done for £50?

Then looking over the Oakview bills with Ann till 10 55/60 and then came upstairs - 10 minutes musing in the north chamber how to finish the passage taken off it into the red room - determined to diaper the room side of it like the rest of the room

Fahrenheit 43 inside and 36 outside at 11 10/60 p.m. fine day
