Thinking of Mariana last night

Fine sunny morning Fahrenheit 41 1/2 inside and Fahrenheit 40 3/4 outside at 8 3/4 and very small snow flying about - breakfast at 9 1/4 in 1/2 hour

Then standing over Robert Norton laying the deal floor of the gallery till after 10 then came to my room and sat down to Wilkinson volume 2

Ann came to me about (before) 11 - about the defeat of the Romans at the Caudine forks - went down to my books, still in the drawing room - temporary book-case, and got her volume 3 Rollin's Roman History on the subject

Had just come upstairs again at 11 1/2 when Mr. & Mrs. Fenton called and staid till 1 1/2 - long and confidential disclosure of their troubles on our leaving them on Wednesday they went to call on the widow Mrs William Emmett old Wilkinson 'courting' her! had offered half a dozen times and she obliged to run round the table to escape him Mr Fenton had consulted his friend Mr Torore who had advised his making a friend of the lady I seconded the advice if the lecherous old man does not get her he will take a worse Mr Fenton to persuade the lady to have him if possible if not to keep him in play how shocking he would never make any settlement on either of his married daughters but said he would allow Mrs Fenton a hundred a year - Mr William Fenton has just lent Mr Rawson Christopher three thousand five hundred at four and a half per cent on bond I said I would not take his bond - Mr William Fenton has nineteen thousand and a half on mortgege [sic] at Halifax

Stood talking to Ann downstairs and then in my room while took a melted jelly Ann says she understood the last money to be lent to Mr Rawson!

Ann off to Cliff hill and I had just written so far at 2 20/60 - did a little before breakfast and afterwards and from 2 20/60 to near 3 and then had made notes and read to page 152 volume ii Wilkinson's Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians

Out at 3 1/4. it soon began to snow for a while during which on the back Lodge road embankment talking to Mark Hepworth whose carts were bringing soil from St. Anne's street Northgate - 2 carts bringing stuff (for Wilson the mason) to the back Lodge from Salem Chapel Wade Street - begun this morning

Then to Listerwick - nobody there - Had seen Joseph Mann at the back Lodge gate - Holt was at Low moor yesterday - the cylinder will not be ready till next Monday week - then to Sun wood quarry - many rough struck flags, and fence wall stone ready for bringing away

Walked leisurely home about 5 - walked about 1/2 hour in front of the house and came in at 5 1/2 - then with Robert the joiner ordering about the work till after 6 - the doorway from the old china closet into the library passage broken thro', by taking out 3 stooths, this afternoon - the library passage floor 2 1/2 inches too high - must be lowered - to be taken up on Monday - Robert Norton and Joseph finished laying the deal floor of the new gallery this afternoon - Robert junior put up piece of mitham panelling (wainscoting) and finished out the wainscoting of the little upper buttery (John footman's pantry) early this afternoon and then broke out the doorway into the library passage - Michael finished this morning the 2 washing tubs and boiler lid for the washhouse (began on Wednesday morning) and then began oiling (second time) the top of the hall

Dressed - read a page or 2 of Wilkinson volume 2

Dinner at 7 5/60 Ann read French - Coffee - read the (single) newspaper - then till 10 3/4 wrote the last 20 lines of today - came upstairs at 11 - looking about for 10 minutes - Fahrenheit 31 1/4 inside and 25 1/2 outside at 11 10/60 p.m. - snow-showery cold wintry day.
