No kiss
Rainy morning Fahrenheit 51 1/2 at 9 1/4 and breakfast in 55 minutes then walked with Ann in the garden on the flags above 1/2 hour
Then looking about in my uncle's room and musing till 11 – then sat reading Gilly’s Vaudois Valleys in the blue room with Ann till prayers at 12 1/2 in 25 minutes to my aunt Cookson and Oddy and George – then sat a little with my aunt and with while she had wine and biscuit till after 2
At church (took Cookson inside and Sarah 1st time outside) at 3 a stranger from Wakefield did all the duty – preached very fairly, 17 minutes from Corinthians iii 17
35 minutes at Cliff Hill Mrs Ann Walker well and in good spirits – took up Cookson and Sarah at the turnpike they having stopt in consequence of the rain – home at 5 1/2
Wrote and sent tonight letter to ‘Mr W. Thomas, Minster Yard, York Post Paid in answer to his letter received last night – Not in want of a lady’s maid – has heard a housekeeper likely to suit me – the footman too young – want one whose character is more than ordinary good for steadiness not under 26 or 25 – well acquainted with his business as footman – active and good tempered, and steady enough to be left at home or willing to travel if required
Dinner at 6 1/2 coffee – Ann read 3 or 4 pages of French – both of us asleep till the letter bag came. Letter from the Courier recommended by Mr Birmingham giving his address – now with the Duchess of St. Albans – will be at liberty in 6 weeks – has travelled twice with the Duke of Buccleugh – with Lord and Lady Barrington et aliis – thought for a moment of writing to Lady Ann Scott to get her to inquire for me about footman of her brother the Duke of Buccleugh – ‘J, Fischer Courier Pattinson’s hotel Brook Street'
With my aunt and read the Morning Herald from 8 55/60 for an hour – then wrote all but the 1st. 1 1/2 lines of today – showery day Fahrenheit 50 now at 10 1/4 p.m. then settling accounts till 10 3/4 p.m.
