Cousin came gently during the day
Fine morning Fahrenheit 64 at 8 1/4 a.m. breakfast over at 10 1/4 - dressed - at Journal till 11 20/60
Out about 11 1/2 in the carriage - to Mademoiselle (Daniel) Cabourg - Figarol - Wallerand -Meurice - inquiring for English family for Oddy to return with - asked Mademoiselle Daniel Cabourg to take Oddy to work with her during my absence no room to spare in the whole house - could she not be at Madame de Bourke's? rooms to spare there - no! this would not do - gave up the plan of leaving Oddy, as she herself said she should like, - with Miss Daniel - then stopt a moment at the embassy and sent Lefevre for the garçon de bureau - he came to the carriage door - will bring Oddy's passport tomorrow signed at the prefecture de police and all quite ready - I had inquired in vain for an English family returning to England - had the passport made out for returning by Calais or Dieppe, determined, if nothing else could be done, for all to go as far as Rouen, and I would then see Oddy off from Dieppe - and then we could all go from Rouen to Bordeaux
At Rue St. Victor at 1 40/60 - could not find my Journal books - pothered about it - Ann quite wrong again on finding that I should go to Magendie at three what a temper she has whether I am pothered or not she seems as if she neither knew nor cared any appeal to pity or anything else is unavailing I sometimes even good heartedness is merged in selfishness or bad temper oh that I was rid of her
At Mr. Magendrie's Quai Malaquai no. 5 at 3 5/60 - waited a minute before he came into the room and came away at 3 10/60 - I had been with him just 4 minutes - said I came de la part de Madam de Bourke yes! she had told him - he asked the constitution of the young lady - to which I replied, in the words of Dr. Double without mentioning him, 'grêle, seche, et irritable' - and hoped the waters of St. Sauveur could do harm - no! very good - but the waters of Barèges les plus fortes - very few ladies could bear them - chiefly for military and men - he said the waters of Eaux bonnes were for those qui crachait du sang - the waters of St. Sauveur mild good for diseases of the Skin - I hoped Mr. Magendrie would convince Madame de Bourke I was going to the St. Sauveur with his approbation &c. &c. and came away - Ann had sat in the carriage waiting for me the 5 minutes and was lying down as if sleeping
Home at 3 25/60 - I had sent Lefevre to see why Rosalie did not come at 9 this morning - she must have her passport - Lefevre gave me Note from Rosalie - she had consulted her medecin - her health would not bear a long sojourn in England - on this account she begged to give up her engagement and if she did not come herself to explain this it was on account of the great regret she felt!!! annoyed - but not sorry for such a person not worth much sorry that all was settled about Oddy's passport
Out again at 3 50/60 and back again, from Rue de la Paix, out at 4 10/60 and sent away the carriage till 8 p.m. - was sitting down to write when Ann came and proposed our walking to Madame Contant's to inquire about the person she had mentioned a day or 2 ago as a Lady's maid that would just suit us - Madame Contant sent for the woman Rue du Faubourg du Roule no. 27 and 29 - she was to be at Madame Contant's in an hour - we to walk about and return at the time - we sauntered in the Passage Choiseul and to the Palais Royal chez my old patissier for each a petit pâté - not good today - back at Madame Contant's in 1 1/2 hour about 6 1/4 - waited a few minutes for the woman - her certificats very good - from Lady Wellesley and Mrs. Caldwell and others which I did not look at - æt 34 but looked much older and lanky and rather trolloping - too old? not taken with her appearance - speaks English very well
Home at 7 10/60 - dinner immediately - out in the carriage, at 8 20/60 Ann and I, and took Lefevre - stopt some time opposite the Jardin Turc to hear the music - a soldier desired the carriage might move off - alighted - admission 1/- per person - In the Jardin from 9 25/60 to 10 20/60 - arrived just at the conclusion of the 1st act or 1st part of the music after which fire-works for 4 or 5 minutes very pretty - then about 10 music again and just staid to hear a very well played beautiful concerto on the oboe - Ann tired, so came away - home at 10 55/60 - fine day -
