Saturday 16 March 1839
Fine mild morning - at 7 40/60 went to the joiners taking up old gallery from the hall to the red room with them till breakfast at 9 1/4, while they breakfasted from 8 1/2 to 9 stood musing in the hall
Breakfast and Ann read aloud a little till 10 - from then to 12 with the joiners - pulled up the flooring over the hall cupboard adjoining the fire place - and all the ceiling down as far as the entrance passage, and gave orders how to put in the new beam (part of the old beam of the old gallery) flush with fire-place across to the floor new of the landing
Dressed - wrote the above of today till went down for Ann to Booth at 12 1/2 with her till after 1 - then with Robert Norton again till 2 3/4 - the library passage floor very difficult to manage - must take it all up - and the doorway from the old China-closet will only be 5 feet 11 inches - ought to be 6 feet - think of taking it down again and cutting away the beam an inch at least so as to make the door 6 feet
Off to Halifax at 2 50/60 - down the old bank - rained a little when I set off - some while talking to Jack Green breaking stone on the top-terrace walk - Robert Mann and William Lord walling at Listerwick - met Joseph Mann near the top of the bank - stood talking some while till it began to rain pretty smartly
They had received the copy of a writ from Mr. Freeman - Mr. Lewis Alexander had given notice to 'put in appearance' that appearance against Alexander at York - must do this or the Manns must pay £50 to Mr. Freeman to let them off and the expence besides - Holt had told Joseph the expence would be £50 + there would be such a bill run up against them - Joseph had been at Mr. Alexander's - said they had not £50 to pay - Alexander asked if they had £20 to give him to go to York with - that was all he should want - but he did not think Freeman would go on with it
Down the old bank to Roper's to look at Harper and Joyce's stoves - 1 at 32/- one at 42/- ordered the latter and a bushel of charcoal to be 1/- a bushel - then to Whitley's - ordered sheet of cardpaper for Ann the London catalogue is printing - one every 5 years - will be ready soon - Ann had written note, and ordered it for me last night - Wilkinson’s 3 volumes Manners and Customs of Ancient Egyptians published at 3 guineas - Booth to inquire the price of his Egypt and Thebes
Returned up the new bank fair - but rained all the way there pretty smartly - walked towards Listerwick - met the Manns on this side the great oak and returned with them - Robert is determined not to pay Freeman £50 - would rather pay to his last penny in going to York - Joseph had told me they had not a thousand pounds but might perhaps raise £50 to a hundred amongst them - or I think he afterwards said paid the sawyers who have been here today and yesterday - and settled with Manns for the last month and entered the accounts and wrote all the above of today till now 6 1/4 - then a few minutes with Ann
Dressed - dinner at 7 5/60 Ann read French - asleep a little while on the sofa - coffee - then Ann and I looking over the settled Oak view mill accounts till came upstairs at 11 55/60 at which hour Fahrenheit 41 1/2 inside and 35 1/2 outside and fair, and whistling wind - fine day till between 1 and 2 p.m. afterwards showery afternoon and evening -
