Saturday 9 March 1839

Fine frosty cold sunny morning and Fahrenheit 39 1/2 inside and 43 1/2 outside at 9 a.m. breakfast at 9 1/4 in 3/4 hour then standing musing on the gallery looking at the joiners

Then about 10 1/2 had Booth - till 12 1/2 - came for money - £50 ended by giving him check for that amount - long talk - tired to death of the Northgate accounts - never done with - It seems I shall have all Booth's bills to pay = £200 except about ten pounds to be paid by Mr. Crossland - said I lost £400 a year by the place - Booth said he thought it would cost ten thousands - yes! I thought it would at the rate of never having done with it - Booth has bills engine house and all to set against his creditors side with me + £300 towards which he has now had 2/3 in account - told him to measure off his work, and let me have these bills that I might know how I was going on

Then had Ann with us - she had a kitchen maid to offer - advised Booth to get Mr. Washington to value for him - supposed 7 1/2 feet of stone under Mrs. Sutherland's cottages near where Sowden is quarrying under the Macaulays 7 1/2 stone at 5/6 Booth thinks per yard super

It was settled last Saturday that Mr. Samuel Washington was wrong about Story's Hatter's street rent - Sowden had paid the money as he stated as Samuel Washington acknowledged the latter saying that it was entered in another book which he had found - Advised Booth to get Samuel Washington to value for him on giving up his farm to Mr. Isaac Hemingway

Sent Booth to dine in the servants hall and I came upstairs at 12 1/2 and had Ann a few minutes and wrote the above of today till 1 10/60 - then at colliery accounts about 1/4 hour Ann came for me to go down stairs about her sisters Oak view mill vouchers - came upstairs again at 2 1/2 and in 1/4 hour finished writing out colliery accounts of Saturday 16th. ultimo - finished writing own Joseph Mann's account in my own book and in his - then at Colliery accounts till 5 10/60 - after next Saturday the next settling day I suppose the colliery will have cost me £5000 + engine &c. &c. will = £7000

Went out at 5 25/60 - walked leisurely to the Lodge and back - then to the back Lodge and sauntered on the embankment then walked in front of the house till the 1/2 hour bell rang at 6 1/2 - then a few minutes with Ann dressed

Dinner at 7 5/60 - Ann read French - coffee read the newspapers (London and Halifax) the former double, till 10 40/60 - sent John Booth this afternoon to Mr. Jubb - he got a violent heating and chill 2 or 3 days ago, and his bowels therefore much affected yesterday and today

Note tonight from Mr. Adam containing Mr. Bull's difference of level between the sill of head goit, and the by-wash, and therefore Messrs. Parker and Adam had according to my instructions paid his bill

Fine day - Fahrenheit 34 inside and 24 outside at 11 1/4 p.m. the hall-scaffolding taken down this afternoon so that all looks clear and well, - the top having been oiled over (linseed oil) twice.
