Fine but dullish - Fahrenheit 59 at 7 50/60 - breakfast in 20 minutes and out at 8 40/60 - rain sent me in in 1/2 hour - reading a little of Walpole's letters - asleep - had Washington between 10 and 11 - no competition among the people for Northgate - only 3 or 4 bidders - the highest £6350 - of course no sale - laughed and said I was very well satisfied - he gave me the sale plan of Stamp's - told him I meant all the work here to be done by piece - I should be away next Saturday - he was to come and see what had been done - paid him two 10 pound bank of England's and £20 Briggs's notes that divided for the £40 bank of England for Miss Walker then had Lowe's boy with the clothes - not a very good fit - the greatcoat a gentleman's box coat with silk buttons! - Love to come himself on Monday morning - the boy to say I was disappointed in the fit, and to take the greatcoat back for livery buttons - then with Charles Howorth measuring to see if middle mullion of low water closet window would be even with the middle of the passage - then came cart from Huddersfield bringing Miss Walker's chair-bed and bedding from Mr. Atkinson's for Matthew to sleep on in my father's room - then dawdling till 1 1/4 having been a minute or 2 with my aunt - poorly this morning - settling with Joseph and telling him how to keep his accounts

From 1 1/2 in about an hour wrote 3 pages to Miss Walker in answer to her letter 3 page and all crossed received this morning will try to be with her 10 minutes before 12 on Tuesday - It will be a great thing if I leave her behind - will stay as long as I can, and bring her back about the 29th. tho' will keep the lodging till the 2nd. June - will see Rokeby and Raby and be in York again about the 27 or 28th. and 1 day enough for packing - I can go over per mail for the yellow carriage and Mrs. Myers can take care of the baggage intended to come by it - Had better keep Smith to receive us on our return from Rokeby &c. to have a boiling kettle &c. - better to have somebody than nobody - as if we do not arrive before 10 the family maybe in bed - If I leave here (Miss Walker) she shall certainly have Eugenie - had catechised Sarah pretty closely - should have been satisfied if she had been at Heworth grange - but not worthwhile to shut up Lidgate for so short a time - thought Miss Walker had been long enough there

Dawdling over 1 thing or other till 5 - then out with Pickells &c. - Settled with him and Charles Howorth dinner at 6 1/2 - read a little of some of Lord Bacon's Essays - from 8 35/60 to 9 35/60 in the hut-walk - 1/4 hour with my aunt - poorly - came to my study at 10 10/60 - reading several papers in the World volume 1 British Essayists - sent off at 8 my letter to 'Miss Walker Heworth Grange York' - wrote the last 12 lines till 11 25/60 Rain soon after 8 a.m. which continued more or less (fine growing day) till near 5 p.m. - afterwards fair and fine moonlight evening -
